Mr. Steve Quirke (X-pert Group) [South Africa]
Paper Title: How we Implemented a Change Control Process in a Large Financial Services Organization (Paper 1M)

After a bachelors degree in Geology and a year in the bush I completed a masters degree in Materials Engineering. Since then my career has followed a slow trajectory through a number of industries and careers.

I started by doing a year of machine health monitoring (vibration analysis) on a Uranium mine in Namibia. Here I made the move into IT where I wrote software for a few years before getting involved in systems analysis and design. Two exciting approaches to IT caught my imagination, Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) and Joint Application Development. I started using data models and data flow models as vehicles to document user requirements in sessions which I facilitated.

Later I moved to Cape Town where I spent time in the Oil Industry doing Data Management, Information Architecture Project Management and finally moved into Quality Management. I also used facilitation as an approach to manage information and people in all these disciplines.

I am currently working as a Software Process Improvement consultant for a large Sanlam Personal Finance, part of Sanlam Financial Services Group. Here I focus on Software Quality and the Organisational Development processes necessary to implement Software Process Improvement.

I live in Somerset West with my wife and three children and spend as much time as possible building rock walls or painting in watercolour.
